Cleveland Museum of Art Ohio City Stages Presented by Charter One
Ohio City will be the place to be on Wednesday nights this July as the Cleveland Museum of Art launches a new free summer series: CMA Ohio City Stages, presented by Charter One. Taking place on the block surrounding Transformer Station (West 29th Street), the museum will bring acclaimed global musical artists to a neighborhood stage.
Bellwether, a project of the museum’s Contemporary Arts Society, will show films selected by contemporary artists on the Transformer Station lawn beginning at 9:30 p.m. Food and beverage will also be available for purchase at the block parties.
Wednesday, July 3: Amadou & Mariam
7:30 p.m. This husband-and-wife duo from Mali has developed an innovative Afro-pop sound that fuses Amadou’s electric blues guitar and the interplay of their voices. Recent performances include a Nobel Peace Prize concert in honor of President Obama, the opening of the last two FIFA World Cups and a tour with U2.
9:30 p.m. Multidisciplinary artist Julia Christensen’s séance consists of two films about the cosmos: The Voyagers (2010) and Interkosmos (2006).
Wednesday, July 10: Fanfare Ciocarlia
7:30 p.m. From the small village of Zece Prajini, Romania, this Balkan brass band plays gypsy music as you’ve never heard it before. Fanfare Ciocarlia has released eight albums, several of which have topped the European World Music charts.
9:30 p.m. Kevin Beasley will create a “DJ Mix” of shorts and clips ranging from contemporary artist videos to Hollywood films.
Wednesday, July 17: Aurelio Martinez
7:30 p.m. A Central American singer, composer and guitarist from a small fishing village in Honduras, Martinez brings a bittersweet vocal style to traditional song forms, particularly Garifuna music. His music blends acoustic instruments with soulful vocals, setting the stage for an emotive fusion of traditional and modern sound.
9:30 p.m. Lenka Clayton will screen two documentaries: Girl Chewing Gum (1976) and 2 into 1 (1997).
Wednesday, July 24: Aziz Sahmaoui & University of Gnawa
7:30 p.m. Mixing traditional songs with new compositions and western influences, this band from Morocco explores Gnawa trance music – a fusion of Arabic north and sub-Saharan south sounds.
9:30 p.m. Video clips arranged by Jerry Birchfield, followed by the Buster Keaton film,Sherlock Jr. (1924).
Wednesday, July 31: Novalima
7:30 p.m. Novalima marries Afro-Peruvian rhythms with sophisticated funk and groove. This high-energy, seven-piece band sets new standards in contemporary music from Latin America.
9:30 p.m. Jacob Ciocci will select a feature-length film.
