Interconnected compositions, intricate musical cycles, and musicians paying homage to one another throughout their lives, will all be presented by the world class artists who come together in Cleveland during the three-week ChamberFest season.

This season, ChamberFest joins forces with Clevelander and internationally acclaimed filmmaker, Kasumi. Her cinematic assemblages will provide visual inspiration for the performance of "Kafka Fragments,” a monumental work for violin and voice by composer, György Kurtág. This one-hour series of short pieces, or “fragments,’” for two violins and voice will be accompanied by digital imagery fragments by Kasumi. ChamberFest fan favorites, Yura Lee and Alexi Kenney will alternately play the violin parts while young, up-and-coming mezzo soprano, Lauren Eberwein provides the vocal piece. The production will take place at Transformer Station on Tuesday, June 20, 2017.

Kasumi is an artist who works in a broad range of media: directing and producing short and feature length experimental films, performing live shows and VJ, creating looping electronic sculptures, designing motion graphics and animated gifs, producing immersive 360 virtual reality pieces and making fine art prints through glitch and data moshing. Her distinctive and personal style has been recognized worldwide. In 2011 she was awarded The John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for her groundbreaking experimental feature film Shockwaves.  Current works-in-progress include wearable electronic art, an app for mobile devices, and four new themed VJ performances.

“Kasumi may not be, in the clinical sense, a synesthete, but her art enacts synesthesia, continually transmogrifying sensory stimuli from one medium to another. No doubt her various artistic careers—including, musician, writer, painter, printmaker, and filmmaker—result from both inborn talents and refinement of those talents. Her films are built from the elemental gestures that communicate and, literally, embody the contents of one’s inner life.” Peter Friedman, Author, Ruling Imagination: Law, Art & Creativity
